Winery History

With the informed choices of the passionate Salvatore Di Gaetano, Firriato Winery has become a symbol of Sicilian wines, reflecting its grape varieties, terroirs, and maritime sunshine. All of its vineyards are certified organic, whether they are located at the base of Mount Etna, on the Aeolian Islands, or in Trapani. Its winemaking techniques, blending tradition and modernity, always aim to highlight the unique characteristics of each plot.

Firriato is established in the Trapani province, one of the main wine regions in Sicily, where centuries of viticulture have granted this area a natural ability to produce wines with a strong identity. In the early 1980s, Salvatore Di Gaetano, a businessman passionate about his homeland, realized that this picturesque landscape had long borne the fruit of his passion: high-quality wines. Thus, in the span of three decades, Firriato has become one of the largest production houses in Sicily.

The original production area in the Trapani countryside expanded through investments in Mount Etna and the Aeolian Islands. The new estates, Cavanera on the volcano and Calamoni on Favignana, brought a diversity of soils and climatic conditions, as well as two extremely distinct types of viticulture: one by the sea and the other in the mountains. Each of Firriato's estates has a distinctive feature related to its exposure, microclimate, soil composition, or ventilation.

From the outset, Salvatore Di Gaetano bet on the potential of indigenous grape varieties. Several native varieties such as Nero d'Avola, Perricone, and Firriato have become wines that have crossed oceans to capture the hearts of enthusiasts. In the Cavanera vineyards lies a rare treasure: vines nearly 150 years old. Firriato has implemented a modern winemaking plan centered on viticulture, aiming to highlight the varietal characteristics of each planted plot. The key to Firriato's success lies in an unwavering axiom: meticulous care at every stage of production, from vineyard to cellar. In recent years, significant investments have been made to control temperature throughout the various phases of transformation, maturation, and barrel aging.

Firriato's strength lies in its consistency in respecting nature, biodiversity, landscape preservation, and innovation; all of its vineyards are certified organic. Before becoming a commercial success, Firriato stands as proof of a Sicily capable of assuming the role of ambassador for Italian excellence throughout the world.
