Please join us on May 18 for a lively discussion of an intriguing novel – Bali OK: A Parable for a Changing Climate, by Carli Spero.

Carli Spero is the pen name of Dr. Clare Wolfowitz, an anthropologist whose focus is the cultures and languages of Indonesia.

Spero means "I hope" in Italian – as Dr. Wolfowitz has shared some of the concerns that inspired her to write the book. "I've been thinking for a while that we need a blockbuster movie – a drama – that captures people's imagination and focuses concern on how we are treating our planet. But something with hope, not another dystopian future."

Some readers posted comments online:

It's a sprightly, very-well-written, adventure-romance for intelligent readers looking for more than mere escapism.

Spero manages to evoke and blend the magic and ancient mysticism of Bali with the demands of both modern science and international politics. And it's all wrapped up in a VERY satisfying romance between two not-young adults from vastly different worlds. Beautiful story, beautifully written.
