About the Museum

The Museum collection originated around the time of the founding of the Montreal General Hospital in 1822 and the Montreal Medical Institute in 1823-1824, the forerunner of the McGill University Medical Faculty. In fact, the most famous artefact in the collection is the Holmes heart, a specimen procured at autopsy in 1822 by Dr. Andrew Holmes, the first Dean of Medicine at McGill. A significant proportion of the specimens in the Museum was gathered in the late 1800s and early 1900s, including several hundred by William Osler during the eight years he spent as a pathologist at the Montreal General Hospital.

About Your Guide

Dr. Richard Fraser is a Professor of Pathology at McGill University and a Senior Pathologist at the McGill University Health Center, Montreal. Although actively involved in pathology service and teaching, he has also developed an interest in medical history and has been the Director of McGill's Maude Abbott Medical Museum since its official inauguration in 2012. With the assistance of a team of dedicated colleagues, he has re-established the once-famous McGill Museum as a valuable educational resource for McGill students and staff as well as the public at large.
